“I am excited that the City of Hartford has partnered with Solarize Connecticut and CT Green Bank to bring renewable energy to Hartford. I encourage our residents and business owners to take advantage of this program, which can help them save money while doing the right thing for the environment.”
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin
Here’s What Your Neighbor’s Are Saying About Their Solar Installations…
For several years, I just assumed that we wouldn’t be able to afford to put solar on our owner-occupied 3-family house in the Wes End of Hartford. Then when I finally filled out an interest form at an Earth Day booth two years ago, the company called and said, “Sorry, we don’t do multi-family houses.” So I waited another year before trying again, this time signing up on the SolarizeCT website. I ended up talking with two different companies, and I selected C-TEC as my installer. C-TEC had a longer history with solar, and the rep was more knowledgeable about the state incentive programs and financing options. C-TEC also negotiated a better price; so it was a win-win-win.
But signing the contract was just the beginning!
We hired a separate electrical contractor to merge all three units into one meter, so we had an additional “moving piece” in our scheduling-permitting-financing puzzle, but C-TEC assigned me a Project Coordinator (essentially a “case manager”), who was my “go-to” person every step of the way. She helped make sure all the different parties were talking to each other. If something seemed stalled, I would notify her, and she would get on the phone and straighten it out. And that didn’t stop until every bit of the installation and permitting was complete. The installation crew was professional, courteous, and flexible in working with me and my tenants. They were here when they said they would be here, and they finished when they said they would finish.
Our system was turned on in early November 2016, and now as spring arrives, every day is a potential new record daily production. On cool sunny days, we are producing more than double our total usage for all three units, so we expect our annual production to exceed the total demand from the whole house – even after our tenants turn on the air-conditioning in the summer.
Our financing package didn’t require us to come up with any up-front money. With a low-interest Smart-E loan through the CT Green Bank, our monthly payments are probably a bit higher than what all three units were previously paying for electricity, but the system will be paid off in 10 years. And in the meantime, it’s wonderful to be powering the whole house with carbon-free solar energy.
